STEP BY STEP: Colour, Character and Culture
Step by Step is the blog of Kate Kerin Interiors. In addition to following some of my clients’ projects, I examine some of the latest issues of interest in the world of interior design.
Following a wonderful month in the United States, I returned to Sydney at the end of October feeling refreshed and inspired. I was delighted to pick up with my client Sue, whose design journey I wrote about last month. Since I’ve been away, Sue’s apartment has been completely transformed – into a red hot mess! She’s right in the midst of the construction phase, and it’s noisy and dirty. Walls have been knocked through, the bathroom completely stripped and the carpet pulled up.
Luckily Sue and her husband Steve are not living in the apartment yet, and she’s philosophical about this phase of the project. But it’s exciting that so much progress has been made, and I’ve assured her it won’t be long before the beautiful fittings and fixtures she’s chosen are installed. Already new floorboards have been laid and other developments are very definitely pending. I’m impressed by the work done by Sue’s trades, under her calm guidance, while I’ve been overseas.
This month, I want to talk a bit about the inspiration I’ve felt while travelling the East Coast of the United States. In a wonderful driving holiday, my husband and I travelled from New York up to the Hamptons, on to New Haven (Connecticut), Matha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, Cape Cod, Boston, Bar Harbor (Maine), then back down through the inland areas of White Mountains (New Hampshire), Vermont, the Catskills (NY) and then finally New York City. It was the most gorgeous time of year to be in New England; Fall. The leaves on the trees were ablaze with colour, the weather was unseasonably mild and we simply fell in love with this part of the world.
It seems to me that there’s something undeniably captivating about how Americans incorporate patriotism into their home decor. During our holiday, I was struck by the thoughtful ways Americans use colour, pattern, and symbols to reflect a sense of national pride and heritage. Bold reds, whites and blues, stars and stripes, and nods to Americana give their spaces a distinct personality, one that feels both inviting and proud. This is noticeable not only in homewares stores and shop fronts, but even in personal homes we observed along the way.
For anyone who values quality and timeless design, this approach can offer real inspiration. Whether you’re downsizing or simply looking to refresh your home, incorporating elements that celebrate your own heritage and personality can transform a house into a truly special home. I believe it’s possible to bring that American-inspired boldness and charm into an Australian context, and it can be a beautiful way to tell your story.
Embracing Colour with Intent
American decor isn’t afraid of bold colours, especially the signature red, white, and blue. While we might immediately associate these hues with the American flag, their use extends beyond symbols of patriotism; they’re colours that create warmth, energy, and character.
For anyone considering a new colour scheme, think about the power of these colour choices when paired with your home’s natural light. Deep reds can provide a grounding element in a living room, setting a tone of elegance and warmth. White, especially when used with natural textures or neutral furnishings, creates openness and clarity, and there are so many shades of white to choose from. Navy or royal blue brings in depth and sophistication, and paler blues can be calming and serene.
In an Australian home, it’s possible to make a statement by using one or more of these colours in smaller, intentional ways. For example, a rich rust-coloured feature wall or a set of blue and white striped armchairs can add a bold yet refined look without overwhelming the space. And of course, colour isn’t just about paint! Look for textiles, rugs, or even ceramic accents that play into this palette in a subtle, sophisticated way.
And what about seasonal colour changes? Americans love October, with its palette of oranges, reds and rusts for both Fall and Halloween. We saw some really gorgeous stoop decorations, with homeowners obviously taking pride in incorporating seasonal colour and spooky accessories to draw in observers and neighbours alike. Halloween is really only starting to take off in Australia, and of course October is Spring for us, not Autumn, but I love it when Aussies go bold and decorate their homes in a temporary, seasonal way.
Celebrating Personal and Cultural Heritage
One of the aspects I admired most was how Americans use decor to celebrate their heritage—whether it’s a vintage sign from a family business or a treasured quilt that’s been passed down through generations. These aren’t just items; they’re a piece of the family’s story, lovingly displayed.
This is something we can adapt beautifully in Australia. For downsizers who are leaving family homes behind, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed at the thought of parting with beloved items. Rather than saying goodbye to everything, why not choose a few treasured pieces to incorporate into your new decor? Perhaps it’s an old photo in a modern frame, a favourite book on display, or even a treasured piece of art that tells your story. This blend of the old with the new allows you to maintain that connection to your past while creating a fresh, personalised space.
Subtle Patterns that Pop
American decor frequently uses bold patterns, like stripes and stars, to add visual interest. In a more restrained palette or as an accent, these patterns can add sophistication and texture to a room. A navy and white striped cushion or a small star-patterned rug can evoke that Americana feel without overdoing it.
If you’re looking for a slightly softer take on this boldness, consider understated geometric patterns or coastal stripes. For example, a striped throw blanket can offer a touch of this style without taking up too much space. If you want to add something more significant, a large, framed piece of patterned fabric or wallpapered feature wall can work wonders to bring depth and subtle character.
Finding Pride in Personal Style
One of the most remarkable aspects of patriotic decor in America is its unapologetic pride. Every element reflects a deep connection to identity and pride in who they are. In Australia, we might not feel as strong a connection to national colours or symbols, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate personal or cultural heritage in our homes.
If you value good design that speaks to who you are, think about how to incorporate elements that are meaningful to you. For example, thoughtfully chosen Indigenous artwork or pieces that reflect your travels or family history can be wonderful focal points. These pieces don’t just look beautiful; they serve as conversation starters and remind you of your journey.
Making Smaller Spaces Work for You
For downsizers moving from a larger family home to a more manageable apartment, finding ways to bring big ideas into smaller spaces is key. American-inspired bold decor can actually work incredibly well in smaller spaces, as it can make them feel more dynamic and interesting.
Consider using a mix of statement pieces and functional furniture that carry a strong sense of design. For example, a navy sofa with white piping can add a coastal or traditional flair without taking up excessive space. A classic leather armchair can lend warmth and sophistication to a corner nook. When every piece has meaning and purpose, it contributes to a feeling of quality and refinement.
Bringing it All Together with Thoughtful Curation
One of the takeaways from my trip was how thoughtfully curated American homes are. Each piece feels intentional, creating a sense of warmth, style, and identity. In a smaller space, this is even more important, as every item must earn its place.
Downsizing doesn’t mean sacrificing style—it means curating a home that reflects your journey and values, while keeping the space practical and manageable. This is where an interior designer can be invaluable, helping you select items that not only look beautiful but fit perfectly with the aesthetic and function of your new home. At Kate Kerin Interiors, we’re here to help you curate pieces that reflect who you are and what you value, while creating a space that feels welcoming, stylish and just right.
