STEP BY STEP: A brand new year!

Step by Step is the blog of Kate Kerin Interiors. In addition to following some of my clients’ projects, I examine some of the latest issues of interest in the world of interior design.

Happy new year to all of my clients and supporters! I’ve taken a short break over the Christmas/New Year period, so I don’t have any client news to update readers on. However 2025 is shaping up to be a fabulous year, so I thought I’d share with you all my design resolutions for the 12 months ahead. Perhaps some of you might share some of these resolutions, or be interested in learning more – reach out if that’s the case, I’d love to chat with you.

1.        I will prioritise comfort and wellbeing in my designs

Spaces that enhance relaxation are vital in today’s busy world. Coming home to a haven that reflects your unique style can mean the difference between feeling calm or being completely overwhelmed. Whether you’re working or retired, 2025 will likely bring its share of decisions, tasks and competing priorities and renovations, moving house and downsizing can add to the pressure. Many of my clients want to simplify their lives by reducing clutter, embracing a balanced lifestyle and spending quality time with loved ones. My focus will be on easing the process, listening carefully to their needs and delivering the home they’re envisioning.

Ergonomic furniture, thoughtful lighting, soothing colours (or bold ones, if that’s your style!), cosy interiors and serene outdoor retreats all contribute to the transformation. Equally important is incorporating cherished pieces that hold special memories, ensuring every design choice is perfectly scaled and aligned with your new home’s aesthetic.

2.       I will create spaces for connection

Even the most elegant empty nest can sometimes feel constrained in terms of space. I will ensure that each home I work on contains adequate room for family gatherings and visits from loved ones, including grandchildren. This can be achieved through thoughtful spatial planning and incorporating clever solutions like built-in breakfast banquettes, plenty of smart storage and creating multi-functional rooms that work hard as a home office doubling as guest suite and/or playroom.

The decorative features can remain stylish yet inviting for all generations. For instance, a space used by grandkids doesn’t need to be dominated by childish design elements – classic colour palettes and removable accessories can make kids feel welcome without limiting the room’s versatility when they’re not around.

The goal is to align your home with your vision, ensuring spaces for connection are thoughtfully planned and beautifully executed.

3.       I will add a touch of luxury

I always encourage my clients to invest in a few quality pieces that delivery joy daily, like a beautiful armchair or bespoke artwork. In 2025 I will work with suppliers to assist my clients in understanding how even small upgrades, such as premium lighting fixtures or soft furnishings, can elevate a home's atmosphere. If your budget is tight, it’s worth remembering that even just one quality piece can upgrade an entire room – good design is a worthy investment, particularly when you are creating a sanctuary that you will spend a lot of time in. I love hunting out bargains, but quality and classic design will always be where my heart lies.

Small touches like a comfortable but unique armchair can elevate your space.

4.       I will prioritise organisation and functionality

I really don’t think there’s anything quite as satisfying as organising key areas such as kitchens, wardrobes or home offices to make life simpler and more efficient. And don’t get me started on the pantry!

If you’re downsizing, you’ll need to declutter and get rid of a lot of items that you haven’t used in a while. Once this is done, you’ll need to consider storage solutions that combine practicality with elegance – think bed frames that incorporate drawers, ottomans with removable lids and window seats with storage inside

Once your things are organised, your mind will be more peaceful – I promise!

5.       I will do my best to make the most sustainable design choices, every time

At the end of the day, it’s up to the client which tiles, benchtops, flooring and other items they purchase. But my advice and guidance can make the difference between sustainable selections and less planet-friendly choices. By presenting clients with options that are sustainably produced and yet still within budget, I can influence the overall sustainability of a project. I can also choose to work with, and recommend, tradespeople and artisans who have a similar ethos. Last year I loved meeting and working with Jemma from @shedeleven, a professional upcycler and artist whose sustainable pieces are simply beautiful and of the highest quality. I will also encourage clients to refresh and reface spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms rather than gutting and completely renovating unless that is truly necessary. My goal in 2025 is to make every project as sustainable as possible, while maintaining quality and elegance in every way
